Frequently Asked Questions Raleigh Expedition

Is Raleigh Costa Rica still linked with Raleigh International?

No, following their closure in May 31, 2022, we are no longer linked with Raleigh International. We continue to operate independently and are running Expeditions in Costa Rica as normal.

If I can no longer attend the expedition that I am signed up for, can I go at another time?

Yes, you can postpone your Expedition for up to one year. This will mean that your deposit and fundraising will go towards your new Expedition.

Is there any discount on Expeditions for Raleigh Alumni?

Yes, Raleigh Alumni are entitled to 10% off their next expedition.

Why do I have to fundraise?

By fundraising for Raleigh Costa Rica you’re not just securing your place on Expedition. You are donating to a youth driven organisation supporting young people taking action against the world’s most pressing issues. In addition to funding our impactful projects that help fight the climate emergency and improve access to education, clean water and sanitation, you are developing useful skills in fundraising and crucially helping spread the work of Raleigh Costa Rica. Fundraising is a great skill to develop as part of your volunteer journey.

When should I apply?

Our Expeditions tend to fill up fast, we would recommend applying as soon as possible to secure your place.

How will I get from the airport to fieldbase?

You will be met at the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) by our staff who will then transport you to our fieldbase in Turrialba to start your induction and training.

Can I travel after my program?

Yes, at the end of Expedition we will drop you off at San Jose airport. If you wish to travel onwards after this that’s up to you! Be advised you will need to obtain a new tourist visa after 90 days if you plan to see more of Costa Rica.

Do I have to be from the United Kingdom to participate?

No, we accept and encourage applications from volunteers across the world.

Do I need a visa to participate?

Provided you have a valid passport and a return ticket, most people that enter Costa Rica will be given a free 90 day tourist visa. Double check entry requirements to ensure this applies to you.

Do I need Insurance to come on the Expedition?

Yes, you will need to obtain and show proof of valid medical insurance. Once you’re signed up you will receive more detailed insurance guidance.

Which projects can I participate in?

If you take part in our 10-Week Expedition, you will take part in three different projects: Environmental, Community and Adventure Leadership Trek.

If you’re on a 7-Week Expedition, you will take part in one project, either work on a Community or Environmental project, and also an Adventure Leadership Trek. We will take your preference into consideration.

On our 4-Week Expedition, you will have the opportunity to work on a Community or Environment project, in addition to a shorter Adventure Leadership Trek phase.

After your initial training in Costa Rica, you will get placed into your first project group of about 12 people, you are then allocated a project. We aim for each group to have a diverse mix of volunteers on project sites; of different ages, gender, nationalities and backgrounds. After each phase you will return to fieldbase for change-over, you will then change groups and take part in your next project.

Can I leave expedition early?

Due to the remote locations of our project sites, it is only possible for a volunteer to return from Expedition under emergency circumstances.

I am going with a friend, can I go in the same project groups as them?

We find that group dynamics are disrupted if there is a group with people who know each other and those who do not. You will be together for the training and induction period at the beginning of the Expedition before heading out to difference project sites, and will see each other during change-over between projects.

What does accommodation look like at project sites?

Suitable accommodation for each phase of Expedition has been organised by Raleigh Costa Rica and largely depends on which phase you are on. During Community Resilience you will be sleeping in classrooms in the indigenous community. On parts of Trek you might stay in community centres or churches, but for the most part you can expect to be camping.

Can I use Expedition for Duke of Edinburgh?

Yes, you can use Expedition for the Residential part of your Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

How much will my flights cost?

Flight prices fluctuate on a daily basis. We recommend buying your flights soon after you have been accepted to Expedition as prices go up nearer the time. If you are coming from the UK, we do have a recommended flight which most people do take. We will provide a recommended time of arrival to be transported from the airport to fieldbase.

What happens if I get sick?

Every Expedition is staffed with Volunteer Managers that have completed comprehensive Outdoor First Aid courses, our comprehensive induction training and carry fully stocked medical kits. Volunteers are also supported by our experienced team of staff at fieldbase.

Is it safe to participate on Expedition?

Yes, safety is our top priority on Expedition, our Expeditions conform to BSi8848: the British standard for adventurous activity outside of the UK. With over 20 years of experience running safe and meaningful programmes in Costa Rica you can rest assured you will be safe on Expedition. We ensure our staff and Volunteer Managers are fully trained and experienced in working with young people in this environment. Volunteer Managers will receive further comprehensive training in their induction ahead of volunteers receiving similar safety on Expedition training.

As with any activity there are risks involved, you will be supported and trained to mitigate those risks. We ask that you follow the protocols we’ve set out for you to be as safe as possible and have a great Expedition.
