Raising awareness of good hygiene and sanitation practices is one of the main aspects of our work in Loma Fría and when we leave, we hope to have had a long-lasting impact on the community.
In the first phase of the project we built Tippy Taps in the two local schools to help the kids wash their hands properly. When they were built it was a great feeling to see the children in the school using the Tippy Taps whilst we taught them the stages of washing their hands.
Concienciar sobre buenas prácticas de higiene y saneamiento es uno de los principales aspectos de nuestro trabajo en Loma Fría y, cuando nos vayamos, esperamos haber tenido un impacto duradero en la comunidad.
En la primera fase del proyecto, construimos Tippy Taps en las dos escuelas locales para ayudar a los niños a lavarse las manos adecuadamente. Cuando se construyeron, fue una gran sensación ver a los niños en la escuela usando Tippy Taps mientras les enseñábamos las etapas de lavarse las manos.
Even more fulfilling though, was returning to the schools and seeing the children remember and use what we´d taught them. We´ve also seen these changes outside of the schools in the community and in our host families. One of our host families has a little girl who is just 2 years old. Through seeing the volunteers who stay with her washing their hands, she now copies and washes her hands every day.
Since living in our new homes, it feels like the community have taken us in and treated us like their own. The changes we have seen are not just from our project work but also from our involvement with the community: kids that were shy around us now greet us with enthusiastic hellos and the community members approach us to have a chat and support us in all our activities.
Aún más satisfactorio, fue regresar a las escuelas y ver a los niños recordar y usar lo que les habíamos enseñado. También hemos visto estos cambios fuera de las escuelas en la comunidad y en nuestras familias anfitrionas. Una de nuestras familias anfitrionas tiene una niña que tiene solo 2 años. Al ver a los voluntarios que se quedan con ella lavándose las manos, ahora copia y se lava las manos todos los días.
Desde que vivimos en nuestros nuevos hogares, parece que la comunidad nos ha acogido y nos ha tratado como si fueran suyos. Los cambios que hemos visto no solo provienen de nuestro trabajo de proyecto, sino también de nuestra participación en la comunidad: los niños que eran tímidos con nosotros ahora nos saludan con entusiasmo y los miembros de la comunidad se acercan a nosotros para conversar y apoyarnos en todo nuestras actividades.
As we approach our final 4 weeks in Loma Fría, we are looking forward to more hard work and rewarding experiences as well as, trying not to think about the prospect of leaving this amazing place.
A medida que nos acercamos a nuestras últimas 4 semanas en Loma Fría, esperamos con ansias trabajar más arduamente y experiencias gratificantes, así como intentar no pensar en la posibilidad de abandonar este lugar increíble.
